Next Up: McKenzie Meadows and Black Bull

Aug 14, 2015

What a terrific run the last four days with 3 superb tournaments at Stony Plain, the Edmonton Petroleum Club, and yesterday at Trestle Creek. We now turn our attention to next week's two events: Monday at McKenzie Meadows GC in Calgary and next Thursday at Black Bull Golf Resort at Ma-Me-O Beach. Only four regular season tourneys are left on the 2015 schedule, so don't miss out on these opportunities to squeeze in some more fun and tournament play and perhaps also earn your way into the Tour Championship coming up on August 31 at Wolf Creek Golf Resort. Remember - McKenzie Meadows is an 8 a.m. shotgun start, so leave home in plenty of time to battle Calgary morning traffic. Call them today to enter!

Trestle Creek Excitement!

Aug 13, 2015

For the second day in a row, we had a sudden victory playoff on the Tour, and for the second day in a row, a player made birdie to win the tournament. Brock Chelle, 16, part of the tremendous junior program at Edmonton's Derrick Golf and Winter Club, made a tap-in birdie on the par-4 9th hole of the Jackpine 9 at Trestle Creek Golf Resort, about 45 minutes west of the Edmonton city limits. Chelle drove the green on the 284-yard par-4 hole, carrying water and sand and flying his ball into the middle of the green in a very gutsy move that paid off for him. He lagged his 30-foot eagle putt up close and brushed it in for the win over Austin Guttinger of High Prairie. Both players had fired excellent rounds of 76 over the tight, hazard-lined fairways and challenging greens. It was 2-for-2 for Derrick youngsters today as Chelle's clubmate Kaitlyn Wingnean shot an excellent 83 to capture her fourth Tour win of the summer. Full results will be on the Tour website by 8 p.m. this evening. Or as soon as I have a cold one, whichever comes first.

Exciting End to a Perfect Day

Aug 12, 2015

What a fantastic junior golf tournament today! The Edmonton Petroleum Golf and Country Club really rolled out the red carpet this morning for 74 junior golfers from as far away as Innisfail and Peace River in what certainly felt like a 'major' event on the McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Crowe MacKay. Jeremie Pasitney of St. Paul two-putted for a birdie on the first hole of a sudden death playoff after he and Nick Vandermey of the Links of Spruce Grove had fired matching rounds of even-par 72. Nikki Norlin of Innisfail had a slightly easier time in the junior girls' division, firing a fine 78, 7 shots clear of Kaitlyn Wingnean of the Derrick. Full results will be on the Tour website by 7:30 p.m. this evening.

Smith, Easthope Scorching in Stony

Aug 10, 2015

It was toasty out there! Nearly 30C heat and virtually windless conditions led to excellent scoring today at the Stony Plain Junior Open. Dakota Smith of the PPC fired a 4-under par 68 for his third Tour win of the season and second in a row, coming on the heels of his victory last week at Goose Hummock. In the junior girls' division, Alicia Easthope of Sandpiper made her first Tour start of the season a good one, as she shot a fine 78 to capture the girls' title. Full results will be on the Tour website by 10 p.m. this evening.

Smith, Wingnean "Goose" the Field

Aug 07, 2015

Smith held a 4-shot overnight lead after his 2-under 69 in the first round of the Goose Hummock Junior Open, a 36-hole event, and no one really got close today as his total of 145 was 5 shots clear of Nick Vandermey and Jeremie Pasitney, co-runners-up at 150. Meanwhile, 12-year-old Kaitlyn Wingnean of the Derrick earned her third victory this year as she continues to draw notice as one of Alberta's top up-and-coming young female players. After a rough day on Thursday with a 97, she rebounded today with an 87 to come out on top. Full results will be on the Tour website by 9 p.m. this evening.
