The McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Crowe MacKay, set down this afternoon at the waterlogged, yet still gorgeous, Barrhead GC for its annual Junior Open.  A total of 44 juniors from across northern Alberta was on hand to compete as many of them tuned up for next week's Alberta Golf Junior Championships to be held at Coal Creek Golf Resort at Ryley, AB.

We had some brilliant golf on display as the competitors took advantage of the recepetive greens in beautiful condition to attack par on all fronts. At the conclusion of the 18 holes of regulation play, Ethan de Graaf, 16, of the Royal Mayfair and 16-year-old Nicholas Mah of the Glendale GCC were tied with fine scores of 3-under par 69, forcing a sudden-death playoff. Mah was the model of consistency, mixing in 3 birdies and no bogies to post his score, while de Graaf came to life on the back 9 with four birdies in a five-hole stretch to come back from being 1-over par after 10 holes.  In the playoff, de Graaf bombed a big drive down the right hand side of the short par-5 1st hole, stiffed a wedge to about 8 feet, and rolled in the eagle putt to win his first Tour event of the summer.  Mah played terrifically himself, as he was bogey-free on the day and still ended up as the runner-up.

Mah and de Graaf both qualified for the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 28th by virtue of their play today, and rightfully so.  They will be joined in the field by Evan Matty of Sturgeon Valley GC, whose 80 topped the flight for the boys born in 2003 and later, and Wild Card qualifiers Jarrett Bossert of Belvedere and Zach Zabot of Eagle Point GC in Wabasca, with matching 2-over par 74s.

In the Junior Girls' division, Brooke Brezovski of Sturgeon Valley fired a steady 89, ten shots clear of her younger sister Belle, also playing out of Sturgeon Valley, and Grace Cho of the Edmonton Petroleum Club.

Two events are coming up next week on the Tour. We are at the sensational Innisfail GCC on Tuesday, July 4th, site of the 2016 Sun Life Financial Alberta Men's Amateur Championship, and next Thursday we have the weather-delayed Drayton Valley Junior Open, which was originally scheduled to kick off the 2017 Tour season in late May but was postponed due to inclement weather.  Many of the province's top juniors will be busy with provincials at Coal Creek GR, but these events will be excellent opportunities for those kids not competing in provincials to get some good tournament exposure and great chances to qualify for Wolf Creek.

Q = Player qualified for Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 28th.

WC = Wild Card Qualifier for Tour Championship

* = Won Tournament on first hole of a sudden victory playoff

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour events.
