Just under a week ago, we were reporting on a junior golf tournament in southwest Edmonton featuring a superbly conditioned golf course (Edmonton Petroleum Club) and outstanding play from Ethan de Graaf and Kaitlyn Wingnean, two of Alberta's best junior golfers. It was deja vu today, as de Graaf fired a 2-under par 69 to reprise his score from the Pete Club, and Wingnean's 81 this morning was best among the junior girls on hand.  Blackhawk GC was recognized last year by SCORE Golf magazine as one of Canada's Top Ten golf courses, and Blackhawk was in full flight today.  Absolutely immaculate fairways and greens combined with stunning North Saskatchewan River valley scenery to serve a feast for the senses for the 65 junior golfers on hand who were privileged to test their games on designer Rod Whitman's masterpiece.  As many of you know, Ponoka's Whitman is one of the golf world's most acclaimed golf course designers, with courses like Wolf Creek and Cabot Links on his world-renowned resume.  Shown here is the stunning backdrop of the North Saskatchewan River valley behind the par-5 11th green at Blackhawk.

de Graaf's 69 was three shots ahead of up-and-comer Josh Salcedo of Jagare Ridge, with perhaps the hottest player on the Tour, Austin Noskiye, another shot back in solo third with a 73. With only two regular season events now remaining prior to the Tour Championship on August 28th at the above mentioned Wolf Creek, players are in full scramble mode for the few remaining qualifying spots in the Tour Championship field.  Gaining those spots today were Brendan Coutts (76) of Windermere from the flight for boys born in 1998-2000, Colton Shaw (84) of Eagle Point in the flight for boys born in 2001-2002, and Kaedin Wolfe of Montgomery Glen (84) out of the group of boys born in 2003 and later.  Earning Wild Card spots today were the host club's Ryan Hughes (79) and Wyatt Lavallee (81) of The Legends GC.

One interesting and unique wrinkle of today's tournament was the post-tournament banquet for the players.  To the best of my memory, this was the first time in the nearly 22 years of the McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour that the kids were presented their own menu of food choices from which to choose!  The chef at Blackhawk has 'game', and the players were offered a selection of a salad, mac and cheese, a beef dip or a burger, but that's a somewhat simplistic description of the food that was being cooked to order and brought to the tables by the serving staff. The food was wonderfully presented, delicious and split pretty evenly between the burgers, mac/cheese and the beef dip sandwiches.  ZERO salads were ordered! LOL

Many of the junior girls in the field today had previously qualified for Wolf Creek, but Belle Brezovski of Sturgeon Valley made sure she gets to ride to Wolf Creek with her older sister Brooke, as Belle took home the qualifying spot up for grabs for junior girls.

Next up on Tour is at Black Bull Golf Resort at Ma-Me-O Beach on Thursday, August 17th, with a 9 a.m. shotgun start.  We have learned that the toll-free phone number listed on the Tour website is now a regular 780-Area Code phone.  Entries ARE still open today for Black Bull, so please call 780.586.2254.  You won't reach the golf course on their former toll-free line. It's a tough golf course, but a terrific challenge for anyone, AND it's the last opportunity to qualify for Wolf Creek north of Red Deer as the final event on the Tour schedule is a week today in Nanton, south of Calgary.

Q = Player Qualified for the Tour Championship at Wolf Creek GR on August 28th.

WC = Wild Card qualifier for Tour Championship

PQ = Player had previously qualified for Tour Championship.

The players listed in the Top Six and ties in each  age group have earned Srixon Order of Merit ranking points.  This is not a complete list of every player who competed today.

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour events.
