The 2017 McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour season got underway this weekend with the 36-hole Henderson Lake Junior Open in Lethbridge. Juniors from as far away and Edmonton, Stony Plain , Calgary and Medicine Hat joined several Lethbridge and area competitors in one of two 36-hole events on the 2017 Tour schedule.  Unusually light winds and warm, sunny skies made scoring conditions ideal.  At the conclusion of play, Alannan Makarchuk of Taber GC and Justin Loro of Country Hills GCC in Calgary came out on top in the junior girls' and boys' divisions respectively.

Makarchuk, one of three siblings in the field, emerged from a tight three-way battle with Chelsea Joseph of Lethbridge CC and Camryn Frasz of Brooks, firing rounds of 86-82 to overcome Frasz' overnight 2-shot lead after Saturday's first round. Makarchuk's two-day total of 86-82 (168) was one shot clear of Joseph (86-83) with Frasz another two shots back in third after rounds of 84-87.  It was a blanket finish as all three girls battled down the stretch on the back nine on Sunday.

In the Junior Boys' division, overnight leader Matt Link of Strathmore had built a 4-shot lead on Saturday with a fine 4-over par 74, but struggled to an 82 on Sunday in slightly higher winds, and probably slightly tighter nerves a contributing factor as well. Justin Loro of Country Hills GCC in Calgary came from 5 shots off the pace after his first round 79 to fire Sunday's low round of 75 to run down Link, whose 2-day total of 156 was T2 wiht Loro's clubmate Matthew Tse (80-76) on 156. Ben Wong, also of Country Hills, joined the party in 2nd place with steady rounds of 78-78, and Wong also captured the flight for boys born in 2001-02 to snag a spot in the 22nd annual Tour Championship at the end of August at Wolf Creek Golf Resort.  Wong will be joined by Loro, Link and Tse, along with Alex Nekich of Lethbridge CC, whose 36-hole total of 166 (85-81) took first place honors in the flight for boys born in 2003 and later.

The Tour swings back into northern Alberta later this week for events on Wednesday, June 28 in Whitecourt and the following day on Thursday, June 29 in Barrhead. Watch the Tour's Twitter feed and the website on Monday for more details about those two tournaments as players tune up for the Alberta Golf provincial Junior Championships in early July at Coal Creek Golf Resort in Ryley.

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour events.
