Over fifty junior golfers from as far away as Edmonton, Mediicine Hat and Picture Butte were on hand this morning at the immaculate Pinebrook GCC in Calgary for the annual renewal of the Kevin Hipple Memorial Junior Open, today's stop on the McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Crowe Mackay. "The Hipple" has been in existence for over 30 years, commemorating the life of a former junior member at Pinebrook.

Inglewood juniors took the top honours in the Gross division of the tournament (more on that later), but the major award at this event is for the overall Low Net Champion, recognizing the youngster who every year has that really good game well beyond his or her usual standards.  Today's Low Net Champion, and recipient of a snappy blue blazer was Nathan Douglas (on the left in the picture above) of the host club, who fired a net score of 8-under par 63, built on a gross score of 90 strokes. Young Mr. Douglas (I'm guessing he's about 12) had a smile as wide as the Bow River as he accepted his blazer and hoisted the gorgeous permanent trophy at the prize presentations.  Stefan Fox, the assistant professional at Pinebrook (R) in charge of their junior program, reports that Nathan has only been playing a couple of years, and is improving by leaps and bounds literally every day.  I'm guessing he might be a name to watch in future years for Low Gross awards on the Tour.

We had some excellent play today from some of the older players on hand.  Andrew Widjaja of Inglewood fired a fine 1-under par 70, two shots clear of Alex Smith of Pinebrook, with Smith's clubmate Shiv Kaura another shot back in solo third on 73. Widjaja led the parade of new qualifiers for the Tour Championship today, and will be joined in the field at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 28th by Nicolas Aulicino (76) from Pinebrook from the flight for boys born in 2003 and later, and Carson Rody, also of Pinebrook (are you starting to see a pattern here?) whose 76 of his own topped the flight for boys born in 2001/02.

Wild Card Qualifiers today included Matthew Tamkee (74), yes, he's from Pinebrook, and Spencer Kalnicki (81), an interloper from Willow Park. John Niedermier, also from Willow Park, tied Kalnicki for the second Wild Card spot with his own 81, but left the premises before we could get his contact information.  John , if you're reading this, please send me an email,,,,,Dunc.....

The junior girls division today was led by the Tour's 2015 Girls Tour Champion, Sharmaine Rapisura from Inglewood GCC, who battled her good friend Taylor Stone from Pinebrook throughout the round. Rapisura's 76 was two shots better than Stone's 78 at the end of the round. Rapisura and Stone finished tied for 4th overall at the recent Alberta Golf Junior Girls Championship at Coal Creek Golf Resort.  Both players qualified for the Tour Championship today, but both will be off to begin their college golf careers by the end of August and won't be in the field at Wolf Creek.  Good luck to both young women in their collegiate careers.

Next event on Tour is Thursday, July 27th in Strathmore, with the always popular Canmore Junior Open coming up a week today in the shadow of the Three Sisters mountains.

Q = Player qualified for Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 28th.

WC = Wild Card qualifier for Tour Championship.

PQ = Player had previously qualified for Tour Championship.

The players listed in the Results section are those that finished in the top 6 and ties in each age group, thereby earning Srixon Order of Merit ranking points.  This is not a full list of the scores of every competitor today.

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour events.
