Ponoka is one of four remaining charter members of the McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour, Presented by Crowe Mackay, joining Lacombe, Nanton and Innisfail as sites that have been on the Tour schedule since our inaugural year in 1996. Director of Golf Rob McPherson and Head Pro Ryan Moore ( a former Ponoka Junior Open champion himself) always roll out the red carpet for junior golf, and today was no exception.

The course was in marvellous  condition this morning, as the club has just finished hosting the Sun Life Financial Alberta Men's Amateur Championship.  While we of course didn't play the course from the tips today, the lightning fast greens were still a great challenge for the 40-odd juniors on hand from Edmonton to Calgary and elsewhere. The younger boys born in 2003 and later played a shorter set of Blue tees today at about 5,600 yards and Cole Bergheim of Red Deer fired a nifty 4-over par 76 for the low round of the day, as the older players could muster nothing better than three competitors tying for first with 77s. The rash of Tour playoffs continued as Sikander Kaleka of Stony Plain continued his fine play in his last year of Tour eligibility, birdieing the Par-5 1st hole in the sudden-victory playoff. Austin Noskiye of the LInks at Spruce Grove and Zack Walker of Forestburg fell by the wayside and Kaleka took top honors among the older kids on hand this morning.

As the Tour heads into the home stretch, many of the players on hand today had already qualified for the upcoming Tour Championship at Wolf Creek Golf Resort on August 28th. New qualifiers today included Walker, Ethan Rake (78) of Cougar Creek, Tyler Wallace (82) of Sylvan Lake GC, and Wild Card qualifiers Glen Gambler (79) of Eagle Point GC, Shawn Cole (84) of Coal Creek, and the host club's Emett Norn, with a 79.

Five junior girls were in the field today, including defending Srixon Order of Merit champion Kaitlyn Wingnean of the Derrick GWC.  Wingnean, who recently finished 10th in the Sun Life Alberta Ladies Amateur down the QEII at the Red Deer GCC, fired a steady 81 today, two shots clear of Royal Mayfair's Ella Gifford.  As Kaitlyn is already in the field in three weeks at Wolf Creek, Gifford snagged today's available Tour Championship spot for the girls.

A busy week  on the Tour continues tomorrow at the prestigious Edmonton Petroleum GCC in the southwest corner of the city.  We expect the largest and deepest field of the year for tomorrow's 8 a.m. shotgun start.  Please leave plenty of time to get to the course, register, warm up AND enjoy the fresh muffins and juice the club will have on hand for the players!

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour events.
