What we lacked today in numbers, we more than made up for in the spirit and enthusiasm of the juniors who DID make the 90-minute drive northwest of Edmonton to the beautifuilly-conditioned Whitecourt GCC for their Junior Open to kick off a busy four-events-in-four-days swing through northern and central Alberta. The event was re-scheduled from late June due to weather and final exam difficulties, which may have contributed to the tournament just not getting its normal traction in attracting their usual field of competitors.

However, this didn't deter Justin Berget of Stony Plain from bagging his second win over the challenging Whitecourt layout, following up his win here three years ago built around the strength of a double-eagle deuce on the par-5 3rd hole back in 2014.  Berget's scorecard today was a 'beastly' mix of 6 birdies - 6 pars - and 6 birdies for an even-par 72, good for a smooth 7-shot win over Srixon Order of Merit leader Jarrett Bossert of Belvedere GCC.  Interestingly enough, when I looked back on the website to the 2014 results to confirm those dates, I noticed a youngster in the results page in the youngest age group:  one Ty Steinbring from Barrhead who was probably 13 or 14 at the time.  Steinbring, who just last week finished third in the Golf Canada Future Links event in Fernie, BC against many of the top juniors from across western Canada, had cruised it around the Whitecourt layout that day three years ago in 89 blows.  Amazing how kids can improve so much in such a short period of time with the opportunity and a ton of hard work.

Hailey Turcotte of Falher, who plays out of the Mighty Peace GC in Peace River, was low junior girl today with a 95.

Next event on Tour is tomorrow morning  at Whitetail Crossing GC in Mundare, followed up on Wednesday at Montgomery Glen GC in Wetaskiwin and in Camrose on Thursday.  All three tournaments are 9 a.m. shotgun starts and entries are still open for both the Wetaskiwin and Camrose tournaments.

Q = Player qualified for Tour Championship at Wolf Creek GR on August 28th.

PQ = Player had previously qualified for Tour Championship.

WC = Wild Card qualifier for Tour Championship.

Justin Berget (pictured here) said after his round, "I hit it sideways out there a couple of times today," so it's only fitting that we showed his picture sideways!

Code of Conduct

The McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour takes great pride in the quality of its competitors, its host facilities, and the support provided by our Corporate Partners. The efforts of the administrative staff and the volunteers that go into making the Tour so successful demand a very high standard of behavior and decorum from the competitors. We have therefore developed a formal Code of Coduct modeled on that of Alberta Golf that provides a set of guidelines for the young men and women that wish to compete in McLennan Ross Junior Golf Tour events.
